At Smart teachers we receive lots of questions about our application process, how we work and who we work with. This blog includes the most frequently asked questions to give you some information about us.
Please note that the clearance questions are aimed at Smart Teachers in the UK. For Australian teachers please visit this page on our website: http://www.smartteachers.co.uk/Content/Downloads/QAAustralia.pdf
What kind of schools does Smart work with?
Smart works with primary, secondary, SEN, independent and faith schools.
What locations do you cover?
For the UK, we work closely with schools all over London and the Home Counties and we also have schools in Bristol. In addition to the UK, we have a strong presence in schools in Australia, with branches in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
What are your rates of pay?
Our rates of pay differ for teachers, teaching assistants and nursery nurses and can depend on experience. Once you meet with one our consultants, they will discuss your salary expectations in more detail.
What kind of work do you offer?
We offer day-to-day supply, short term blocks, maternity cover, long term placements and permanent teaching jobs. We can also help you find part time work whilst you study or work elsewhere.
Does it cost me to sign up to your recruitment agency?
No – Smart Teachers works to provide a service for our candidates that is completely free of charge.
What does the application process consist of?
Once you send us your CV we will be in touch to discuss realistic job opportunities with you. If suitable work is available we will ask to meet you face-to-face. If we can’t help, we promise not to waste your time. In London, you will meet your personal consultant and we will ask you to provide documents such as right to work and qualifications. We will ask you to provide suitable reference details and if you are not already CRB checked we will put an application in process for you. You may also require overseas police checks if you have lived outside the UK for over three months. Once we have obtained all these details your file will be cleared for work by our compliance team and you can start working.
Why all the paperwork?
Smart Teachers takes the responsibility of placing teachers in front of children very seriously. We are committed to ensuring our vetting procedures are second to none. We are a quality mark agency which means we have to meet certain standards and guidelines set out by the REC. We have a dedicated team of administrators who ensure that these guidelines are met.
Do I need QTS?
If you qualified in the UK or the European Economic Area (EEA) you need QTS to teach in the UK. If you qualified outside the EEA you can work for up to four years in England as a temporary teacher without the need for QTS.
Please see the Teaching Agency website for more details on this: http://www.education.gov.uk/b00204081/award-of-qts
Is my teaching qualification suitable for the UK?
This depends on where and what you studied. In some cases you may be required to get a NARIC (UK comparison certificate) which will confirm what your degree is equivalent to in the UK.
How long does it take to process a CRB?
CRBs can take between two and 12 weeks to process. If we are delayed in sending the application due to not having the correct documents this will be increased.
I don’t have any teaching experience, can you help?
Due to the fact that we are a quality mark agency we are unable to help those who have no teaching experience. We would suggest that you contact local schools and offer yourself as a volunteer to gain some experience. We would ask that you gain at least a term of experience and then contact us.
Do you help NQTs?
Yes absolutely! Whether you are looking for supply work, short term contracts or a position where you can complete your induction year we can help.
Can I request to work in a particular school?
Smart can only find you work in schools that are already using us. We value our teachers’ feedback so if you particularly like a school that you work for through Smart, let us know and we will try to do the same again!
Do you offer CPD training?
We do offer CPD training which is free of charge for our registered candidates. We cover the following topics: interactive whiteboard training, behaviour management and national curriculum.
Do you offer sponsorship to your teachers?
We do not offer sponsorship or visas to our candidates. Those coming from overseas must have the right to work in the UK.
If we have not answered your question in the topics above please feel free to get in touch and we will do our best to provide the information you are looking for.
